How To Help Children And Youth With Low Self–Esteem Or That Lacks Confidence
Low self-esteem can make living and learning very painful. It can create behavior challenges. Low self-esteem can prevent future success in adult life. It can lead to a very painful and costly life. Low self-esteem can be due to and complicated by a combination of: medical conditions; learning and developmental challenges; a lack of consistent, meaningful success; family communication patterns; over/under expectations; unrealistic expectations; family members competing for attention; lack of acknowledgement; exposure to environmental pollutants; nutritional imbalances; exhaustion; prolonged stress; emotional and/or physical discomfort from accidents, traumas and abuses of all kinds; insufficient educational programs.

On Our Own We Would Try: • Less or No TV, Movies, Video/Computer Games • Wholesome Pleasures • Replace sodas, juices, sugars, fats, fast foods with water, veggies, whole grains, nuts, protein, fruit, slow food • Long Walks/Hikes • Bedtime Stories and Chats • Back Rubs and Foot Massages • Nature • Pets |
For Parents: • Get a medical evaluation from a practitioner who is familiar and supportive of the above practices. • Discovering how the low self-esteem got started is the first step. Learning about this may be painful for the family. • Facing the child or youth’s low self-esteem may be difficult. • Taking action will boost everyone’s self-esteem. • Choose to change how you are bringing up your child or youth. • Find courses in parenting from your medical team, public health department, local schools or religious organizations. • Have daily family time spent reading and also having enjoyable physical activity (for at least an hour). |
